The main purpose of this work package is to steer the consolidation and growth of the EGI community by developing a strategy towards the Open Science Commons vision and ensure the engagement of the all stakeholders. This will be achieved by developing services, solutions and related business models, and by communicating project results and disseminating EGI’s value and impact. The activity will also focus on the engagement with SMEs to increase the opportunities of exploitations of EGI services and research results. The key objectives of this work package are summarised as follow:

  • Build a sense of community, keep the EGI community informed of the partners’ successes and working developments.
  • Disseminate the project’s outputs and success stories, to maximise impacts.
  • Develop the EGI strategy and governance towards the Open Science Commons vision and assess performance towards the goals.
  • Assess the EGI impact by defining and measuring key indicators.
  • Evolve the services and solutions portfolio and related business models according to customer needs.
  • Establish collaboration agreements with strategic partners in areas such as service providers, policy bodies, European and international alliances, and industry.
  • Facilitate the engagement with SMEs in a wide range of industry sectors and roles by the creation of a flexible, collaborative, and exportable framework.
  • Explore the creation of pilot projects that may lead to enhanced services or products fit for commercial exploitation, specifically those based on Open Data and in selected industry sectors

TASK NA2.1 Communication and Dissemination

(Lead:, M1 – M30)

To achieve its objectives and exploit its results, EGI-Engage needs to make the most of its human capital. This depends on efficient communication between all stakeholders within the EGI community, and efficient dissemination of outputs. This task will maintain communication activities to serve these two purposes throughout the whole project (M1-M30).
Communication channels
The communication channels will be used in both communication activities and dissemination of results according to the Communications and Dissemination plan to be developed at the onset of the project. These channels will aim to strengthen the sense of community within EGI and keep all relevant parties informed and up-to-date with the activities of the organisation. The main channels of internal communication will be the website, blogs, case studies, a quarterly newsletter and a director’s letter and publications. They are complemented by the channels provided by the other partners within EGI. Together, the communication channels will also provide a platform through which the EGI Community can present, discuss and disseminate.
This activity consists of two main areas: organise internal events and coordinate the presence of EGI at external events. The event activities will contribute to the progress of the project by creating a productive working environment where collaborations can flourish.

  • Internal events: EGI-Engage will organise two flagship events per year: the Community Forum and the Technical Forum, bringing together the EGI’s stakeholders (resource providers, technical experts and operations people) to enable networking and exploring collaboration opportunities. There will also be support provided for smaller or NGI workshops aimed at specific audiences or topics.
  • External events: EGI-Engage will be present at relevant external events focusing on technical, policy and user issues and relevant to all intended target groups.

Research Champions programme
The Champions are researchers who use EGI’s services for their work and have first-hand knowledge of the advantages of EGI to ERA. The aim of the programme is to motivate potential new users to learn more about EGI but also to inform EGI’s engagement and communications strategies. The task will:

  • Collect the Champions’ feedback to increase the quality and relevance of the publications and documentation produced by task NA2.1.2.
  • Make the most of the Champions’ networks for dissemination purposes and deploy the Champions to promote EGI and its services at the events they go to as scientists.
  • Support the Champions’ travel to events and integrate their expertise and know-how in outreach activities.

TASK NA2.2 Strategy, Business Development and Exploitation

(Lead:, M1 – M30)

EGI is an open ICT ecosystem of organisations navigating in a complex, rapidly changing environment. This task includes a number of activities in the area of strategy, governance, policy and business development, all developed throughout the whole project (M1-M30) unless otherwise specified.

NA2.2.1: Strategic Planning and Evaluation (Leader:

EGI needs to monitor and analyse its external environment and its internal conditions to make sure the objectives and tactics of the initiative are aligned with the real situation. This activity includes iterations of the established strategic planning process as an essential activity to ensure adaption of the plan to the changing circumstances. It will note any possible changes and if relevant propose amendments. The results will be used as basis for discussion and decision-making at the appropriate management boards of the project and of the initiative (EGI Council and EGI Executive Board). An essential part will be also to monitor the execution of the strategy to ensure the achievements of the overall goals. The output of this activity is a yearly update of the EGI sustainability plan that includes both the EGI strategy map and the balanced scorecard.

NA2.2.2: Governance Evolution (Leader:

This activity will assess the suitability of the EGI governance model in relationship to the evolution of the strategy and the business models. The ERIC opportunity will be reassessed. Recommendations will be defined and submitted to the EGI Council for discussion and adoption through a dedicated workshop. The activity will support the implementation of the approved changes. will lead this work while the represented NGIs will act as advisor to bring their national viewpoint.

NA2.2.3: Impact Assessment (Leader:

The goal of this activity is to define a number of qualitative and quantitative indicators to assess the impact of EGI. They are instrumental to support the communication of the EGI value and impact to key stakeholders through the various communication channels. They will be organised in a lightweight compendium. will lead this activity while represented NGIs will collaborate on the definition of the indicators, which will require information from all NGIs part of EGI and from the researchers.

NA2.2.4: Service & Solution Strategy  (Leader:

This activity will include the revision and adaptation of the EGI services and solutions offering, and the harmonisation of the portfolios at the national or regional level. To support the financial sustainability analysis, the cost model for the services coordinated by will be evolved as well as the assessment of costs performed on a yearly basis. This activity will also ensure that the adoption of the FitSM standard within the EGI community will continue so to expand the number of NGIs aligned with it and increase its maturity.

NA2.2.5: Cross-border procurement of e-Infrastructure services (Leader: CERN 6PM - Partners: BBMRI 2PM, CSIC (LifeWatch) 2PM, RBI (DARIAH) 2PM, INGV (EPOS) 2PM,

With e-Infrastructures evolving towards service-oriented provision with on-demand allocation and pay-for-use capabilities, there is an opportunity for analysing and revising the procurement process for e-Infrastructure services. Currently publicly funded resource providers and their users lack the knowledge and mechanisms to collectively bid within a public procurement process. The goal of this activity is to analyse opportunities and barriers for cross-border procurement of e-Infrastructure services and to identify best practices that could enable RIs or large research collaborations to acquire services to support their research agenda collectively. A number of RIs and infrastructure providers will contribute to the analysis and documentation of use cases. A final report will be produced identifying opportunities, barriers, use cases and best practices. The report will be disseminated to relevant authorities at national and international level, including those involved in structural funding, and feedback will be collected. The activity will be led by CERN with the contribution of INGV (representing EPOS), CSIC (representing LifeWatch), BBMRI-ERIC, RBI (representing DARIAH) and (representing EGI and liaising with the NGIs).

NA2.2.6: Pay-for-use Implementation (Leader: - Partners: IICT-BAS 2PM, CSIC 2PM, GRNET 2PM, INFN 2PM, TUBITAK 2PM)

EGI operates within a publicly funded research and academic environment providing services free at point of delivery with resources bought from grants dedicated to certain groups or disciplines either by direct allocation or by peer review. With the advent of cloud computing, business models and user expectations are shifting towards on-demand and pay-for-use service provision increasing flexibility and agility. This new paradigm provides motivation for EGI to explore new service definitions by enabling the possibility to provide ICT services that can be paid for the use, along with the more traditional procurement of resources to be managed and offered for free to the owners. This activity is closely linked to the EGI Marketplace and JRA1.

NA2.2.7: EGI Marketplace (Leader: SWING 7PM - Partners: CSIC 2PM, GRNET 3PM, INFN 3PM, TUBITAK 3PM,

Establishment of an EGI marketplace of IT services for science, ideally applying the one-shop-stop concept. This task involves the analysis and development of a legal, policy and business framework for a marketplace capability that would allow the request, provision, accounting, billing of e-Infrastructure services. The activity will develop scenarios for allocating capacity to research communities in collaborations with pilot user communities (user-driven scenario development), identify incentive mechanisms for resource centres to provide capacity, analyse revenue streams (e.g., PCP, PPI, direct charging to users, free service at point of delivery), analyse integration with other marketplaces (e.g., Helix Nebula). Outputs of the pay-for-use activity and the procurement study will be fed into this work. The EGI marketplace activity will be led by SWING with the participation of the represented NGIs and and will collaborate with task JRA1.1 for the technical work.

NA2.2.8: Collaboration Partnerships  (Leader:

EGI continuously works to establish collaborations with external partners as an essential activity to increase the community, reduce duplication of effort, leverage a wider range of knowledge and create opportunities of mutual benefit within Europe and beyond to ultimate support excellent science

NA2.2.9: Exploitation (Leader:

This activity will maintain an up-to-date catalogue of project results and will define the most appropriate routes for exploitation by the project partners. The intellectual property rights aspect will also analysed and appropriate protection strategies considered. The activity will liaise with task TNA2.1 for the dissemination activity and task TNA2.3 for the market analysis and opportunities with the industry sector.

TASK NA2.3 SME/Industry Engagement and Big Data Value Chain

(Lead:, M1 – M30)

Estimated effort: 67.5PM
The key objectives of this task are to:

  1. Facilitate the connection of EGI with SMEs at a European and National level;
  2. Understand the requirements from SMEs in all sectors but with special focus on the agriculture and food and the fishery and marine sciences sectors, which will provide use cases for the creation of enhanced services unifying computing and data approaches;
  3. Create a model (similar to a master franchise) for SME engagement that will be put in practice but can also later be adopted and adapted for a wider number of NGIs/Resource Centres;
  4. Attract SMEs to explore and detect opportunities and threats around the Open Data and co-develop business models for their exploitation.

There are synergies identified with Task 2.2 for business development.

NA2.3.1: SME engagement (Leader: Sy Holsinger, 21.5PM - Partners: IICT-BAS 2.5PM, SWING 2.5PM, CSIC 2.5PM, CSC 2.5PM, CNRS 2.5PM, GRNET 2.5PM, INFN 2.5PM, SURFSara 2.5PM, LIP 2.5PM)  

This activity has the following objectives: understand the requirements of SMEs and define models for engagement, and increase the skills of the participating NGIs (and EGI in general) to approach SMEs and figure out possible ways of collaboration, also leading to the creation of future business projects. This activity will start with an internal discussion among the participants, produce content and material. Promising SMEs will be identified and contacted in appropriate forums (e.g. industrial clusters, scientific community forums, or initiatives related to Open Data, Big Data Value, and European SME Instruments). The project will leverage in open data generated in selected fields and possibly may use EGI resources as enabling systems. Some of these projects are expected to produce outcomes fit for commercial exploitation. This activity for will be developed throughout the whole project M1-M30.
NA2.3.2: Market analysis and user requirements in selected sectors (Leader: GRNET 3.5PM - Partners: 2.5PM)

The objectives of this activity are: investigate market potential, size, structure, stakeholder composition and segmentation, value chains, competing offerings of the agri-food, and/or geospatial data analytics sector in Europe, and possibly extended to other geographical areas such as North and South America; collect and validate a wide set of requirements from the identified SMEs that will be used to profile new and enhanced EGI services; propose recommendations for new and enhanced services for (big) and/or open data services targeting the industry and academia. This activity will focus on developing personas (descriptions of typical users) and scenarios described in detail, and then validate these assumptions in a series of interviews with potential users. The scope of the interviewees is intended to cover different roles, segments, and activities. This activity also examine what problems EGI can address (market/product fit), the specific challenges, and, if possible co-develop demonstrators or prototypes. GRNET is responsible for the lead and the production of the deliverable D2.10. This activity will be developed through M1-M18.
NA2.3.3: Data policies, legal aspects and market analysis (fishery and marine sciences) (Leader: Engineering 6PM - Partners: CNR 2PM, FAO 4.5PM) 

This activity consists of two main areas: identification data sharing policies and legal aspects as well as a market analysis for fishery and marine scientific. The following sections provide further details around these activities. FAO’s inputs to the project will focus on legal interoperability, Engineering will focus on the production of the market analysis, whereas CNR’s role is in technical analysis. This activity will be developed through M1-M12.
NA2.3.3.1: Data Sharing Policies and Legal Aspects (fishery and marine sciences datasets) (Leader: FAO)

The objectives are to: 

  1. Explore legal barriers in sharing fishery & marine sciences datasets (raw and processed data) with other institutions and communities, which would prevent research and business opportunities;
  2. Deliver a framework of legally relevant instructions to data providers and consumers on how to describe their data, the access to this data, and the lifecycle of data and contents and / or of parts thereof in an infrastructure;
  3. Validate a use case with a selected community of a regional database targeting fisheries’ productivity;
  4. Devise a context where infrastructure support to processing a mix of public and non-public datasets results in improved data availability whilst respecting legal dissemination boundaries;
  5. Advise on how the legal interoperability is best supported through infrastructure security, especially where storage and access arrangements are required (e.g. to support confidentiality needs of data owners). This issue will be done by working with Regional Fishery Bodies on the development of regional databases in support to stock assessment and fishery management, or discussing value of public data in data value added chain with its community partners.

NA2.3.3.2Market Analysis of the fishery and marine sciences data analysis sector (Leader: Engineering - Partners: CNR)

The objectives of this activity are to: investigate the data analysis sector in Europe and worldwide and identify stakeholders and related interests, value chains and revenue streams, and competing players. The analysis will include an assessment of the market size and potential of the sector, main actors identification and description (customers, providers, competitors, others), market structure, opportunities and threats, identification of value chains, and recommendations of how to address the opportunities.
