Motivation

An EGI science gateway is a community-specific set of tools, applications, and data collections that are integrated together via a web portal or a desktop application, providing access to resources and services from the European Grid Infrastructure. These gateways can support a variety of community-specific capabilities including workflows, virtualisation of software and hardware, visualization, resource discovery, job execution, access to data collections, repositories, applications and tools. A science gateway enables community members to define and perform custom research scenarios. Science gateways can hide the complexities of distributed infrastructures from researchers, therefore several communities build or would like to build science gateways for their members.

The EGI.eu User Community Support Team together with its partners from the NGIs and VRCs has already setup dedicated webpages to present basic information about ready to use science gateways and about science gateway enabling technologies for gateway developers. However, identifying the right set of technologies from this set, collecting and applying best practices and solutions to have a science domain specific gateway can be still a difficult task for some. This VT aims to help gateway developers and provide an 'EGI gateway primer', a manual that collects useful and up to date information from the EGI community about science gateway development.

Output

The expected outputs of the project are:

  1. Up to date and complete information in the EGI Application Database about EGI science gateways and science gateway enabling technologies. Achieved and implemented in EGI Applications Database.
  2. Recommendations on how to improve the data structure of the EGI Application Database and the EGI website to better support science gateway developers. Achieved and implemented in EGI Applications Database.
  3. A comprehensive document, an 'EGI gateway primer', that collects information about technologies, policies, solutions that exist from the EGI community for gateway developers. An internal draft exist, but a public primer was not prepared.

Tasks

  1. Check, and if needed sanitise the information that is presented about science gateways and science gateway enabling technologies on the EGI website from the EGI Applications Database
  2. Make recommendations for data structure updates in the EGI Applications Database in order to better support science gateway users and developers
  3. Define the structure (Table of content) of the EGI gateway primer [Task leaders: Peter Kacsuk, Ricardo Graciani]
  4. Collect and integrate contributions in the EGI gateway primer [Task leaders: Peter Kacsuk, Ricardo Graciani]
  5. Promote the EGI gateway primer to existing and to new EGI communities

Members

How to join:

Email nuno.ferreira@egi.eu if you wish to join this Virtual Team.

Members role:

The VT members have different roles under the scope of this project:

  • Active members are the ones which committed effort to the Primer
  • Observer members want to be kept updated about the achievements of the VT

All members can participate in the telcon conferences. For managerial purposes these roles are highlighted bellow.

Resources

Progress

The progress per defined SGP-VT task is shown bellow.

  1. Check, and if needed sanitize the information that is presented about science gateways and science gateway enabling technologies on the EGI website from the EGI Applications Database
    • Status : non-functional
      • This task depends on the recommendations done by the VT members towards AppDB (see task 2 bellow)
      • All gateway contacts will be informed if there's the need of, once the AppDB recommendations are implemented in AppDB
  2. Make recommendations for data structure updates in the EGI Applications Database in order to better support science gateway users and developers
    • Status : Done
      • The recommendations were recorded and fed as requirements to AppDB developers
      • AppDB and EGI.eu UCST reviewed the recommendations and provided feedback.
  3. Define the structure (Table of contents) of the EGI gateway primer
    • Status : Done
      • the Primer table of contents (ToC) had several rounds of editions (last change on the 25th Oct. 2012)
      • current Primer ToC might be different due to re-shuffling of topics or to lack of contribution to some topics
  4. Collect and integrate contributions in the EGI gateway primer
    • Status : Drafted
      • Current version of the draft document - 0.9 (21 Dec. 2012)
      • Contributions from the VT members in closed.
  5. Promote the EGI gateway primer to existing and to new EGI communities
    • Status : In progression
      • The 1st draft public version (v0.5) was released for external review (22th Nov. 2012)
      • Dissemination channels: EGI - AppDB relevant profiles, blog, twitter, forum, mailing lists (UCB, Portal Community); SCI-BUS dissemination channels; ...
      • External review comments are being discussed and incorporated into the Primer if relevant and accepted by the chapter leaders
      • Final public version to be released and disseminated in 2013 after EGI.eu fully reviews/accepts the document.
