[https://documents.egi.eu/document/1341 This report] is the final output of the EGI-InSPIRE Virtual Team project Fire and Smoke Simulation. The project started in December 2011, run for 6 months and published this final report in September 2012. The report describes the work that was carried out by the project, as well as collected requirements of Fire simulation community towards EGI infrastructure. The document reports the issues that have been identified by the project and describes follow up actions that can lead towards an EGI VRC on Fire and Smoke simulation.
One of the recommended follow up actions of the report is to connect the NGIs to the identified, active fire simulation research groups. Ladislav and Jolana, leaders of the VT, sent out direct emails to the EGI user support contacts (to the NILs where this is available) at the beginning of October and introduced them to the active fire simulation research groups. Emails went out to Italy, Serbia, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Poland, Turkey, UK, Portugal and China. The emails asked these EGI contacts to get in touch with the respective national fire simulation teams on behalf of their NGI and on behalf of EGI, to inform these research groups about the services the the NGIs can offer to them, and to identify areas for possible collaborations. From these individual discussions the specifics of a distributed and collaborative computing infrastructure for fire simulation will hopefully emerge, and a VRC with one or more VOs could be established to address these needs.

Motivation
In the last decade fire science and fire engineering have grown thanks to the continuous progress of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), both in the field of theoretical modelling of physical phenomena and in the field of technological implementation of these models through the use of complex algorithms and thanks to the grown power of modern computers. CFD and numerical heat transfer are characterized by huge computational demand, far beyond the capabilities of current computers for certain applications. Not only computing power but also advanced networking and data storage systems are needed for this type of simulations. Correct parallel implementation of CFD techniques requires solution of nontrivial numerical problems. There are essentially two possibilities for simulating fire with CFD models:
- using general purpose CFD models to study the effects of fire (such as Fluent or StarCD)
- using CFD models purposely developed for the study of fire and its effects (such as Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) and Smartfire) - require good knowledge of fire and its effects; geometrical set-up of fire scenario is usually very complex, because these models at this stage do not include internal CAD features and do not allow automatic import of CAD files; PyroSim is a graphical user interface for FDS.
This Virtual Team follows the second option and aims to establish a fire and smoke simulation Virtual Research Community on EGI by
- Porting three types of parallel implementations of the FDS application to the European Grid Infrastructure.
- Identifying user communities for the ported application.
- Providing support for the communities to use the FDS application on EGI.
- Further developing the FDS application based on the feedback from the users.
Output
This report is the final output of the EGI-InSPIRE Virtual Team project Fire and Smoke Simulation.
Tasks
The required output for the project will be achieved by the following tasks:
- Contacting fire simulation teams within the NGIs and collecting input requirements from them for the EGI-enabled version of the FDS application.
- Setup a survey to collect information about the priorities and needs of fire simulation groups concerning e-infrastructure use.
- Circulate the survey to fire simulation groups within the NGIs.
- Collect and analyse survey results
- Write summary report that would make recommendations for EGI towards establishing a fire simulation VRC

After EVO meeting, based on partners experiences, we started to broaden the scope and goals of the VTP:
- Fire and smoke simulation using FDS
- Forest fire simulations
- FireSim
- FarSite
- FireStation
Re-specified VTP goals:
This Virtual Team aims
- to establish a Fire and smoke simulation Virtual Research Community on EGI and
- to specify requirements of Fire simulation applications towards EGI grid environment
- Acquired experiences may lead to future creation of a consortium aiming to apply for funded EU project.
Different kind of fire simulations will be considered,
- such as tunel fires, building fires, as well as
- other fire simulation applications tests for other types of fires, e.g. forest fires.
Fire and smoke simulation can be a priority topic in Mediterranean countries.
One of the main goals of EGI-InSPIRE is to collect user requirements and provide support for the current and potential new user communities. In the scope of the virtual team project Fire and smoke simulation we have prepared a questionnaire "Requirements of Fire simulation applications towards EGI grid environment". The questionnaire has been sent to fire simulation experts from 12 countries. Based on answers to these questions we have collected requirements and experiences of smoke and fire simulation scientists - what is needed on EGI to benefit the scientific community from this field.
The VT received input from 3 NGIs (Spain, Portugal, Slovakia).
