2. ACTIVITY REPORT
2.1. Progress Summary
In the reported period, All NGI_DE sites ran the Grid services well with the availability and reliability as high as 96.7% in average. Operation problems were discussed in the regular coordination meeting. The ROD team worked well. Some sites upgraded the operation software. New hardware was introduced. Security update was done by all sites.
KIT successfully organized the 2011 GridKa School with about 100 international participants. Another two workshops were organized by sites of NGI-DE.
2.2. Main Achievements
The main achievements of NGI_DE in the report period were the smooth running of Grid services in the entire region. GridKa School and two other workshops were organized successfully. Some sites participated in Staged Rollout. Regional Nagios box was updated and ARC deploying was started. The following are concrete achievements of some sites:
- DESY-HH replaced the old hardware used for the WNs. CPU capacity grew up from 32kHS06 to 38kHS06 and storage was enlarged from 2.7PB at the beginning of the quarter to the current 3.5PB online storage. This site also performed the migration to the EMI release: half of the services runs on EMI releases (WMSs, top/site level BDII, VOMs, etc.)
- BMRZ-Frankfurt has been upgrading parts of the grid system to gLite 3.2 and performed normal maintenance and problem solving work.
- KIT tried to install the UMD release 1.1 for gLite login and bookkeeping package.
- SCAI finished gLite LFC migration. Five worker nodes hardware were replaced and software was reinstalled due to some hardware failures. Some tests were made with WMS and UI packages from EMI.
- MPPMU delivered 256TB additional space and fixed problems with the information system, CREAM CEs, and APEL. This site also upgraded CREAM CE to the latest release glite-CREAM-3.2.13-1.
- ITWM participated in Participation in EMI staged rolled and plans to establish a HA setup for GOCDB.
- Uni-Freiburg solved the problems with the CERN DNS.
- Fraunhofer ITWM installed the CA updates and the SL 5.7 update.
- FZJ contributed to the UNICORE Integration Task Force.
- LRZ deployed two machines with Scientific Linux 5, and installed GridFTP, MyProxy and Replica Location Service (RLS) from EGI repositories (UMD).
For RLS a back end database had to be set up. Services have been tested and are now in production. At the end of September, RLS and GridFTP have been updated to RLS 1.2.
2.3. Issues and mitigation
Issue Description | Mitigation Description |
---|---|
MPPMU encountered problems with the information system and CREAM CE, which influenced the availability and reliability. | The CREAM CE problem was caused by lack of memory. It was solved. |
RWTH Aachen got problems with dCache (4000 files with wrong checksums), which was probably caused by a raid controller. | Still under investigation |
TUDresden-ZIH had problems with the gstat/BDII published data. This was caused by a wrong torque queue configuration. | Problem was fixed correspondingly. |
FZJ: Resource Centre Certification and Resource Centre Operational Level Agreement procedures and requirements as currently established do not match the reality of sites offering UNICORE services. | Discussions in the UNICORE Integration Task Force are ongoing. FZJ plans to solve site certification and OLA issues in the next quarter. |
