WP4 develops and implements a strategy to ensure the exploitation of the EDISON Educational and Training Model through the definition of the service portfolio based on the outputs of WP2 and WP3, the business models, the analysis of the sustainability potential of the project outputs, as well as the operation of education and training programmes following the EDISON framework.
The strategy should ensure the establishment of a sustainable community that can continue and evolve EDISON activities after the project ends. This overall goal can be broken down into the following objectives:
- (Task 4.1 INMARK): To keep an always up-to-date observatory on the potential market to ensure that EDISON is fully aware of such continuously growing landscape
- (Task 4.2 EGI.eu): To define what of the EDISON results may constitute the project legacy and how leveraging on them in order to define a sustainable business model
- (Task 4.3 ENG): To implement a roadmap needed to pave the way for the achievement of the long-term objective for the recognition of the Data Scientist as a Profession

Task 4.1 Strategic Market analysis for sustainability potential.

The task is responsible for the formulation of the business and exploitation plans needed to secure sustainability and to increase the impact of the project outputs [input to WP1 exploitation plan]. The task will define the Data Scientist education and training growth potential and the type and level of competitive pressure in this area. The purpose of this task is to ensure that EDISON products and services are positioned on the market to fulfil demand needs in a profitable (sustainable) manner.
This strategic market and competitors diagnose will be performed along the entire EDISON lifecycle and will comprise analyses both “towards inside the consortium” and towards the competitive landscape, using well known strategic marketing tools such as PEST, SWOT and market maturity modelling tools, to deliver the Demand side vision and the Supply side vision. Analyses “within the consortium” will be performed via bilateral and multilateral discussion groups specifically focused in the diverse components of the business modelling process. For the externally oriented activities aiming at analysing the competitive environment for future delivery/commercialisation of EDISON solutions, the following market research techniques will be applied: Desk Research, focused on getting the basic comprehensive quantitative and qualitative information on the potential education and training marketplace for our outputs as well as regarding our competitors. Interviews/surveys with market players: data and information gathering will be complemented with the outputs of the validation activities foreseen across the project as well as from feedback gathered through the performance of the WP5 activities. This task is carried out during the whole project duration to full alignment of activities with the market evolution, providing also feedback to WP2 and WP3 on their activities.
Task 4.2. Business models definition.

This task will be responsible for the definition of the business model via the widely used “Business model Canvas” tool, i.e. describing Business Models on four areas: customers, offer, infrastructure and financial viability and main model components: target customer segments, leading distribution channels, value propositions/products and services range, revenue streams. The task will define the governing model, policies and processes that are required for the EDISON community to maintain and sustain the output of the project, including the knowledge and community that will be gathered [connected with task 4.3]. These will evolve during the project in parallel with the sustainability and business plan. This task will support the development of operational plans of the partners providing services.

The task is responsible for the implementation of Business Models defined in Task 4.2, the related go-to-market strategies for the exploitation of the services portfolio including:
- The Educational Model, which will need periodic updates, comprising the DS-BoK and its profiles, the best practices and guidelines, and the human networks needed to regulate the demand and supply chain.
- The Training Marketplace and related infrastructure supporting education activities for data scientists, the tools for the federation and sharing of education materials, and life-long training programmes.
- The Data Scientist Professional certification schema and the long-term roadmap for its implementation.
The task will be responsible for the definition of the operational structure and the support given to an increasing number of pilots in the three use cases proposed:
- the University Champions
- life-long learning
- the accreditation of an existing courses.
This task will define the production and roll-out programmes, costs and pricing policies, financial structuring and viability monitoring processes, and other components.
This task will be responsible for the definition of the long-term EDISON Educational Model roadmap to ensure an increasing adoption of the EDISON approach beyond the project time frame, including the maintenance and evolution of the Educational Model and the implementation of the certification Schema.
Task 4.4. Definition of a certification scheme

Long-term sustainability of EDISON outputs will be closely tied to the ability of those educated in new skills to demonstrate this knowledge in a well-recognised way. Certification of individuals (like e.g. “self-made” Data Science experts) would support this, and also be highly valuable in promotion and marketing of EDISON outputs.
EDISON must look forward and ensure this knowledge can be formed into such a certification scheme. The certification programme will comply with ISO standards for certification and different forms of formal certifications will be considered (e.g. through the involvement of a formal certification authority, by attending expedited on-line courses). Developing a personal certification scheme will involve the following activities:
- Definition of the overall certification schema such as the number of levels of certification, the target groups according to the EDISON MC-DS and profiles according to the DS-BoK and CF-DS;
- Definition of the certification authority and pricing scheme;
- Development of training policies including trainer requirements, “training the trainer” schemes;
- Definition of IPR management in the future certification scheme;
Planning the execution of the certification scheme, establishing informal agreement between interested actors, certification authorities (e.g. TUV SUD) or international organisation for Science (e.g. ICSTI1 ).
The task will exploit the DS-BoK and the CF-DS to give content and competences to be covered in the certification and goals for resulting competences, which will be provided by WP2.3. Project partners will draw experience from similar developments of certification schemes in other European projects.
