2.1. User Support achievements
As one of the outcomes of successful NGI_AEGIS user support activities, IPB’s researcher Milovan Suvakov was selected to participate in Lighting talks session (https://indico.egi.eu/indico/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=2112) at EGI Community Forum 2014 that will be held in Helsinki, Finland between 19-23 May 2014 (http://cf2014.egi.eu/). This session will give opportunity to researchers to showcase their best research results demonstrating how these were supported by the European Grid Insfrastructure (EGI) and the National Grid Initiatives (NGIs). Dr Suvakov, together with IPB’s Veljko Dmitrasinovic was dealing with Newtonian three-body problem. For two centuries, attempts were made at a general solution until H. Bruns showed that only specific particular solutions were possible but only three families of collisionless periodic orbits were known until recently. IPB researchers discovered 24 new families of periodic orbits with many more left to be discovered as they have searched only a 2-dimensional subspace of the full 5-dimensional space of initial conditions. They have developed an algorithm for the identification of orbits using shape-sphere topology of its trajectory. In his EGI Lightning talk he will show how massive computing could be useful even for better understanding of an age old problem. EGI was important for their research by providing them computational and storage resources. Furthermore, large scale search that they are planning to launch is impossible without the usage of such infrastructure. Numerical simulations used for this research were partially performed on computing and storage resources from Academic and Educational Grid Initiative of Serbia (AEGIS), through the AEGIS VO. A number of Grid jobs were submitted through the user interface machine provided for end users at the Scientific Computing Laboratory of the Institute of Physics Belgrade.
Another outcome of our user support efforts to condensed matter physics community was described in article published in EGI Inspired newsletter (issue 14). In this article (http://www.egi.eu/news-and-media/newsletters/Inspired_Issue_14/aegis-sg.html) IPB’s Antun Balaz described the advantages of a SCI-BUS based AEGIS CMPC science gateway (http://sci-bus.ipb.ac.rs/) developed at Scientific Computing Laboratory of the Institute of Physics Belgrade (http://www.scl.rs/). To increase the potential user base of the applications, gateway was created to provide seamless access to the applications provided to the Serbian condensed matter physics community (GP-SCL, SPEEDUP and QSPEEDUP) and the data obtained from the calculations. The science gateway was developed within the framework of the SCI-BUS project, using the AEGIS infrastructure and relying on the widely-used Liferay-based WS-PGRADE/gUSE portal. The science gateway hides the complexity of the grid, which was a barrier for many scientists. GP-SCL, SPEEDUP and QSPEEDUP applications are developed by scientists from the Scientific Computing Laboratory of the Institute of Physics Belgrade and are used by an increasing number of collaborators from within Serbia, Europe, Brazil, India and China. The applications are deployed on the computing infrastructure provided by the Academic and Educational Grid Initiative of Serbia, part of EGI.
As a part of our standard user support activities, we provided necessary information to researches from Faculty of Mathematics in Belgrade for running MPI jobs on Grid, and we supported scientists from University of Kragujevac in running their large scale simulations on NGI_AEGIS Grid Infrastructure.
Regular maintenance of NGI_AEGIS Helpdesk (https://helpdesk.aegis.rs/) and AEGIS web site (http://www.aegis.rs/) was performed in this quarter. Together with the team from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), as a follow up of OpenSSL "Heartbleed" vulnerability, host certificate for NGI_AEGIS Helpdesk was updated. We continued to participate in testing activities of GGUS and NGI_AEGIS Helpdesk interface after each new release of GGUS portal.
Although EGI-Inspire project will end, our support activities will be continued with the same commitment with the aim to improve Grid usage experience to the current users and to bring it closer and more accessible to the new scientific communities.
