National Grid Infrastructure for Scientific Research in Belarus

HPC/HTC resources and virtual services for Belarusian education, academic and industrial research community.

Brief description of the legal entity: The United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (UIIP NASB) is the leading Belarusian governmental institution for carrying out fundamental and applied research in the fields of information technology and computer science. The UIIP NASB has about 450 staff including 270 research workers: 18 scientists with DSc degree and 73 with PhD degree. Presently the UIIP NASB is an associate member of GEANT project, represents Belarus in TERENA, EGI and IGTF. Also the UIIP NASB is the Belarusian coordinator and principal executor of all the supercomputer state programs including joint Russian-Belarusian cooperation.

Brief history of the technology development: SKIF 2000-2004: Development and creation of supercomputer family SKIF; TRIADA 2005-2008: Development of applications based on SKIF supercomputers; SKIF-Grid 2007-2010: Development of Grid technologies and new generation SKIF supercomputers; Grid-CIS 2014-current: United Grid Infrastructure of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Short description of available resources: The UIIP NASB operates the Network of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (BASNET) that is connected to the pan-European research network GEANT. The computing power and storage is distributed between several HPC/HTC resource centers.

User communities

User communities are represented by industrial enterprises, scientific centers and laboratories:

  • The Scientific-Engineering State Unitary Enterprise "Geoinformation systems" of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus;
  • The National Scientific and Educational Center of Particles and High-Energy Physics;
  • The National Ozone Monitoring Research and Educational Center;
  • The National Hydrometeorological Center;
  • The Laboratory of Systems Dynamics and Material Mechanics;
  • The Laboratory of Technical System Synthesis;
  • The Laboratory of High Performance Computer Systems;
  • The Laboratory of Image Processing and Recognition;
  • The Laboratory of Biomedical Images Analysis;
  • The Laboratory of Information Protection;
  • The Laboratory of Bioinformatics;
  • The Laboratory of Protein Engineering.

UIIP NASB coordinates the National Grid Competence Centre and provides support to several user communities in the following domains:

Computer engineering

Support objectives: Technical support and consultancy to existing and prospective user communities on usage of finite element method packages in HPC/Grid environment for various applications.

Current status activity: - active collaboration with industrial partners.

Medical Image Analysis

Support objectives: Dissemination of Grid-Technologies among Medical Radiology (Tuberculosis/Lung Cancer) and Histology/citology (Ovarian Cancer/Thuroid Gland Cancer) specialists.

Development projects that could bring benefits to this community: creation of database of medical images available for analysis on distributed computing infrastructures; Development/adaptation of the tools for data/image mining in large biomedical image databases, distributed image data storage and retrieval, content-based medical image retrieval, distributed biomedical image processing and analysis

Communities to be effected: - international medical associations; - medical specialists working in the subject domain.

Current cooperation and support: - UIIP NASB activity is in cooperation with Sweden and Broad Institute (USA); - Supported by National Institute of Health USA and Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus.

Current status activity: Example of the result of international cooperation is the portal [1] with unique data for research. A lot of work done in past for national medical institutions.

Weather Research and Forecasting

Support objectives: Creation of the service constantly running tasks on monitoring weather conditions in different regions and allerting parameters for possible severe weather events.

Development projects that could bring benefits to this community: - Integrated automated system for forecasting severe weather events.

Communities to be effected: - international weather research communities; - Hydrometeorology forecasting centers.

Current cooperation and support: - Cooperation with NGI_ARMGRID already established and activities are ongoing, funds requested from state scientific bodies to support international cooperation on that subject; - The State Scientific Institution "The United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus"; - National Ozone Monitoring Research and Educational Center; - National Hydrometeorological Center; - Belarusian State University; - Financial support from Belarusian State program of actions on climate change (2013 - 2020).

Bionformatics/Biophysics and Cell Engineering/Chemistry

Current status activity: - The State Scientific Institution "The Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus"; - The State Scientific Institution "The Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus"; - Belarusian State University; - Belarusian National Technical University.

Robotics

Support objectives: Creation of the service for robotics developers to use the Grid infrastructure.

Development projects that could bring benefits to this community: - HPC/HTC support for robot's simultaneous localization and mapping tasks (a technique used by robots and autonomous vehicles to build up a map within an unknown environment (without a priori knowledge), or to update a map within a known environment (with a priori knowledge from a given map), while at the same time keeping track of their current location).

Communities to be effected: - international robotics developer communities; - Specific Institutes and organizations (inc. SMEs).

Current cooperation and support: - International cooperation of the team members; - Supported by the State Scientific Institution "The United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus"; - Supported byHi-Tech Park Belarus; - Supported by the Scientific and Technological Association Infopark.

National Grid Competence Centre

The Grid Competence Centre is an instrument which UIIP NASB is implementing to:

  • Ensure continued support to existing and prospective user communities from academia and industry;
  • Meet new user requirements by: 1) supporting technical development of NGI services of the core infrastructure platform; 2) testing, integrating and adopting new ICT technologies that have a broad impact on user communities and significant potential for exploitation to ensure the evolution of the NGI service portfolio;
  • Facilitate the adoption of NGI services by funding the technical integration of Virtual Research Environments to NGI services.

The Grid Compenetence Centre bridges networks of existing and prospective research communities from academia and industry within the competence of the following State organizations:
