National Grid Infrastructure for Scientific Research in Belarus

Brief description of the legal entity: The United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (UIIP NASB) is the leading Belarusian governmental institution for carrying out fundamental and applied research in the fields of information technology and computer science. The UIIP NASB has about 450 staff including 270 research workers: 18 scientists with DSc degree and 73 with PhD degree. Presently the UIIP NASB is an associate member of GEANT 3 project, represents Belarus in TERENA and takes part in the European Commission-funded BalticGrid-II project. Also the UIIP NASB is the Belarusian coordinator and principal executor of three former and present Russian-Belarusian joint supercomputer programs: SKIF (Development and creation of supercomputer family SKIF, 2000-2004); TRIADA (Development of applications based on SKIF supercomputers, 2005-2008) and SKIF-Grid (Development of Grid technologies and new generation SKIF supercomputers, 2007-2010). The most important results of the SKIF programs are the National Supercomputer and GRID Centers. The UIIP NASB has set up Belarusian Grid CA and has obtained full accreditation from EUGridPMA for the CA. The UIIP NASB operates the Network of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (BASNET) that is connected to the pan-European research network GEANT (622 Mb/sec). The UIIP NASB runs central services for gLite sites in Belarus and governs the Operation Center for UNICORE national grid segment.
