The EGI Federated Cloud is part of EGI production infrastructure, a seamless grid of academic private clouds and virtualised resources, built around open standards and focusing on the requirements of the scientific community.

The Federated Cloud is targeted at researchers and research communities that need to access digital resources on a flexible environment, using common standards to support their data- and computing intensive experiments.

When using EGI Federated Cloud resources, researchers and research communities can count on:

  • Total control over deployed applications
  • Elastic resource consumption based on real need
  • Immediately processed workloads – no more waiting time
  • An extended e-Infrastructure across resource providers in Europe
  • Service performance scaled with elastic resource consumption

EGi Federated Cloud intends to solve specific compatibility problems that researchers have migrating between Resource Centres in search of larger capacity. Researchers are usually confronted with the decision of abandoning the migration or investing in the re-development of their application or interface for the new environment.

Resource Centres benefit from EGI Federated Cloud, as they can offer their computing resources to a broader base of research-users. Ultimately, a more effective usage of the available resources benefits not only research community but also European society as a whole.

The EGI Federated Cloud infrastructure is in production since mid May 2014 as presented at the EGI Community Forum 2014.

What the EGI Federated Cloud can do for you

If you are a scientists, a member of a research project or a user service provider, the EGI Federated Cloud can provide you with a flexible environment to run your application and services.

If you are an organization, an institution or a company which provides (or is willing to provide) cloud resources, the EGI Federated Cloud can link you to a wide research and public European network, supporting you in the provision of cloud-based services to your and other pan-European user communities.

EGI Cloud Community

The EGI Federated Cloud has three types of members. If you want to join as user community, resource provider or technology provider, or if you are already a member and need specific guides or information, please follow the links below.

  1. User communities. Individuals and institutions that use already or plan to use cloud technologies for their activities. If you want to register yourself or your user community to the EGI FedCloud services, you can follow the instructions in this page
  2. Resource providers. Institutions and companies that contribute to the FedCloud providing access to their cloud infrastructure via the Federation. If you are interested in joining the FedCloud as a resource provider, you can follow the instructions in this page
  3. Technology providers. Institutions and companies that develop cloud technologies and contribute technical know how and development effort for the Federation. If you are interested in helping the FedCloud technology design and development, join the task force.
