EGI Activity groups
To better coordinate work within EGI Community following types of groups have been introduced:
Special Interest groups
(aka Working group)
Coordinated by: EGI Operations team
Indico:
Special Interest groups are communities with a shared interest in advancing a specific area of knowledge, learning or technology where members cooperate to affect or to produce solutions within their particular field.
Each group can have medium-term goals that are not immediately achievable.

Policy boards
Coordinated by: EGI Policy team
Indico:
A policy group is an internal EGI.eu body created to define policies and procedures within a specific functional area (technology, operations, user community, policy and administration). They are responsible for developing EGI.eu’s strategic and operational policy framework and, thus, for ensuring the stability and availability of a European generic e-Infrastructure.
Each policy group has well-defined responsibilities, composition and operational procedures. It is chaired by an elected or appointed member of the community who is an acknowledged expert in the appropriate subject area. The chair reports the progress of the group’s work to the EGI.eu management.

Virtual team
(aka Task Force)
Coordinated by: EGI Outreach team
Indico:
Virtual Teams enables NGIs and EGI.eu staff to initiate and participate in short-lived projects (also known as Virtual Team projects) that focus on well defined activities. These activities can cover areas such as Marketing & Communication; Strategic Planning and Policy Support; Community outreach and events for new users; Operations; Technical outreach and support to new communities. The framework allows the EGI community to plan all related activities in conjunction and collaboration with the NGIs.
Each group should have short term, well defined, achievable goals.

Competence Centers
Coordinated by: EGI-Engage WP6 leader
Indico:
EGI-Engage project initiatives created to support high-impact Research Infrastructures/communities by joint development of customised services for these based on core EGI capabilities, by user engagement and training.
Each of CC are distributed centres where National Grid Initiatives (NGIs), user communities (scientific institutes), technology and service providers join forces. Competence Centres collect and analyse requirements, integrate community-specific applications into state-of-the-art services, foster interoperability across e-Infrastructures, and evolve services through a user-centric development model.
